Un curso propio

feminismo, literatura y cultura

Dear Un curso propio community,
we end the year with the Conference and Workshop

«Decoloniality and Feminism on the Edge: Epistemologies, Dissident Subjects and Aesthetics»

Join us on 30.11 (on this day we have live streaming) and 01.12 in Heidelberg with our incredible guests:

Conceição Evaristo. Born in Pindura Saia, a slum in Belo Horizonte (MG), as the second daughter of Joana Josefina Evaristo, a washerwoman who raised nine children amidst many difficulties. Evaristo’s fiction deals with the silencing of marginalized voices, and visualizes with a specific poetical sensibility the histories of black women living in impoverished conditions, contesting the desire of Brazilian hegemonic petty bourgeoise society to erase or ignore the strong presence of African people and their descendants in the national formation. She coined the term Escrevivência for her way of writing. “Escrevivência” means “to tell our stories from our perspectives.” The neologism is compounded by “escrita” (writing, in English) and “vivência”, as in experience. For her, it represents her Place of speech and subjectivity as a black woman in Brazilian society, which, according to her, would inevitably contaminate her writing. Evaristos literature is the most particular and innovating new form of representation of Afrobrasilidade in contemporary everyday life, that offers a complex vision of a world that (re)cognizes and starts from a multiplicity of voices. Within that framework, this research will focus on her themes of the body, procreation, reproduction, slavery, and desire.

Ruth Sonderegger. Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetic Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Until 2009 she held the chair of «Metaphysics and its History» at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. After studying philosophy and literature in Innsbruck, Konstanz and Berlin, she received her doctorate from the FU Berlin in 1998. From 1993-2001 she was a research assistant at the Philosophical Institute of the FU Berlin, and from 2001 – 2009 she was a lecturer at the Philosophical Institute of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Teaching focus: History of Western aesthetics, cultural studies, political philosophy and critical theories.                                                             Current research interests: (1) the colonial dimension of the formation of Western aesthetics in the 18th century; (2) the contribution of art and cultural (theories) to so-called primitive accumulation; (3) theories and practices of critique.

Calila das Mercês (Conceição do Jacuípe) is a Brazilian poet, writer and literature researcher (UnB). She is a post-doctoral researcher in a program coordinated by writer and professor Conceição Evaristo at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of São Paulo (USP). She has published literary texts in Brazilian and international publications. She received the Literary Research Grant from the National Library Foundation in 2015, and the Antonieta de Barros Award – Young Black Communicators in 2016. Among her published works are the books Notas de um interior circundante e outros afetos in 2019 and her first book of short stories, Planta Oração in 2022.
